Only in Vegas Baby...BikeFest 2007
By: Steven Peltier You all know we are ridiculously obsessed with moto racing and carbon fiber clad go-fast bikes. But, I'll be the first to acknowledge that there's just something wicked about a chromed out Road King that hits you over the head with American pride. So when Vegas calls...SMR answers. This weekend I loaded the sidebags and joined a couple hundred bikers in a ride across the desert to take on the Las Vegas BikeFest 2007 Rally. Don't worry. I won't bore you with the usual "I can't believe how nice everyone was" statements. We all know that motorcyclists are good people. The Harley nation is no exception. What I was pleased to hear, with nearly every conversation, was how technically savvy my tattooed brothers and sisters were, even on the subject of GPS and mapping. While I saw nary a single GPS unit installed amongst the sea of chrome, I did meet a great many folks who would love to see the technology extended to the cruiser market...just not in the form of a gray plastic football. So there you have it Garmin and Tom Tom. As you work to improve the function of Nav systems for bikers, don't forget about the form. If Apple can make the iPhone, you can make a chrome plated GPS unit that is smaller than a television. That all being said, and to quell any impressions that this trip was all about technology mumbo jumbo, here's a few PG images from the event. You didn't think I'd go to BikeFest and deny you a glimpse of the bikini contest? Don't worry I threw in a few bike pics to round things out...afterall what happens in Vegas...
