Riding for Change

By: Steven Peltier

With the meteoric rise and historic election of Barack Obama to the US Presidency, the world is abuzz with chatter about hope, bipartisanship, and scattered definitions of change. Concerns over the economy, energy, infrastructure, health and global stability still weigh on just about everyone, but I can't help but feel like we've turned a corner. I believe change is a comin', but I think the most meaningful change isn't brewing within Washington, but rather arriving in the form of a collective social upwelling of renewed optimism.

The world has been bombarded with somber reports and a near continuous stream of negativity for far too long. As a rider, I feel like the election was a reminder to refocus, to take on a renewed sense of urgency to connect with the individuals and activities that have a positive impact on my life - the perfect ride, the perfect road. On the bike I'm focused. My senses are sharp, and I'm reminded to appreciate the freedoms and wonder of the natural world, an appreciation that I believe is requisite to any efforts to affect positive change. I'm not saying that motorcycling is the recipe to all the world's ills (unfortunately for us), but I bet if we all spend a few more days next year out on the road, that change we seek will seem to come a little bit faster. Check out our Rally section to find meet-ups and killer rides that will get you in the mood for a prosperous and positive New Year.
