I call this my breakfast ride, as it is the route I take many weekend mornings up the coast to meet friends at the San Tropez bistro in Encinitas. Basically using Sea World as any easily identified starting point, you can head over the bridge into Pacific Beach through Crown Point via Ingraham. From Ingraham simply cut over west on Grand (less traffic than Garnet) to Mission Blvd. Mission will lead you out of PB and into south La Jolla. Take La Jolla Blvd north at Turquoise and follow it up through Birdrock and into the heart of La Jolla. There are a number of incredible beach/surf spots along the way. Windansea Beach at the end of Nautilus has to be one of the nicest beaches in all of California...definitely worth a stop to check out the surf and the girls. As you filter through downtown La Jolla you can cruise past the Cove or connect to Torrey Pines road and head up the coast. Stay on Torrey Pines up the canyon to UCSD, and then around the campus to where it connects with Genesee. Turn left to stay on Torrey Pines and cruise past the golf course and then down the hill to Torrey Pines state beach. This is a nice place to slow down, raise the visor, and just soak in the ocean breeze. Form here, you're only a couple miles south of downtown Del Mar. Traffic usually becomes a factor from here on up as you cruise from Del Mar to Solana Beach thorugh Cardiff and into Encinitas. As I mentioned before, San Tropez is a great outdoor place at the entrance to Encinitas to grab breakfast or lunch with plenty of parking right on Hwy 101. The rest of the trip up through Carlsbad and into Oceanside is more of the same with plenty of opportunities to cut over to interesting rides like Elfin Forest. Note: on the weekends the traffic southbound on 101 is brutal...plan accordingly.
