Eagle River to Copper Harbor (Sand Dunes Drive, M/SR26)

Ride Description and Comments

Contributer: klown77 (03-14-2007)
Distance: 21.5 mi.

This ride just about has it all as far as a motorcyclist is concerned. Although remote, it's worth the effort. The road is a smooth, two lane ribbon of asphalt. It rises and falls, twists and turns as it follows the shoreline of Lake Superior. But don't rush. Take your time and enjoy the views. The combination of forest on one side and one of the worlds largest and most pictuesque lakes on the other is a hard combination to beat. Yes, it's remote. And, if you were to focus on only this part of the ride, it's short. But fear not. Getting there is as much fun as being there. We got here as part of a Lake Superior Circle Tour. But if you only have time to drive directly there, you're still okay. Michgan's Upper Penninsula is beautiful - especially the western half. Make this ride a segment of a much larger ride and you'll experience motorcycle touring at its best. From the Porcupine Mountains to the Kewenaw Penninsula; to Marquette and on to the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore; and then to Paradise and the Whitefish Point Shipwreck museum; then the Soo locks; it's all wonderful scenery and good roads. And if you haven't done it yet, crossing the Mackinaw Bridge is an experience. If you've got the time, park your bike and take the ferry to Mackinaw Island and take a walk back in time. Buy some fudge while you're there and your trip will be just about complete. For sure, add this one to your must ride list.
