Banning-Idllwild Hwy is a beautiful mountain ride from I-10 to the SR371/SR74 juction. From there the scenery changes from mountain pines to desert palms, but the road is equally great. The Paradise Cafe is at the junction of 74 and 371 about halfway through the ride around 40 minutes out of Palm Springs. Great little watering-hole with beer on tap, fantastic soups, sandwiches and out of this world coleslaw! May be closed on Monday so call ahead. Watch for gravel in some of the turns and be sure to stop at the scenic overlooks! There is a great overlook on SR74, just before the final set of twists and curves that take you to the desert floor.
