Freemont Canyon

Ride Description and Comments

Contributer: smammon (04-29-2007)
Distance: 94.6 mi.

This ride will last a few hours - (mostly because of the sights) and takes you to two lakes, two dams, and one amazing bridge connected with some gorgeous twisty roads and long cruises through beautiful country. Have lunch in Casper and then plan to spend the afternoon. This track leaves Casper starting in a west side restaurant parking lot and goes to the Alcova Marina first. I would instead suggest that you stop for fuel or ice cream at Sloans (at the intersection of 220 and CR-407 and then continue around CR-407 first. CR-407 is a rough / broken / frost heaved two lane. 50mph is plenty. Stop and stare at Freemont Canyon (note the rock climbers in upper right of the photo) and then enjoy the approx. 25 tight turns leading to the Pathfinder Dam. On today's ride however the road was in bad shape. Many corners had broken pavement / potholes / and blown sand. Ride careful! Back on 220 - make a right at the sign for the Alcova marinina and enjoy the twisty high view of the lake as you ride down. Spend the evening with a drink or dinner at the marina overlooking the lake! Nice cruise back to Casper to end the day.
