Contributer: Bikergrady (08-18-2008)
Distance: 150 mi.
This is a scenic ride along the Illinois River and the Mississippi River. It is about 150 miles long and takes about six to seven leisurely hours to complete. The route starts at the junction of I-270 and Hwy 367. Ride north on Hwy 367, cross the Missouri River and the Mississippi into Alton IL. Illinois is helmet free so lose the lid if you so choose. If you are hungry, stop by Fast Eddies in Alton or Danny's for some liquid refreshments. Continue riding north on Hwy 67 through Alton, Godfrey and New Delhi to Jerseyville. At Jerseyville, ride west on Hwy 16 through Feldon to Hwy 100. Bear right and continue west on Hwy 100 to Hardin, IL. If you want some good grub at good prices, turn south after crossing the Bridge and ride to the south end of Hardin and Mel's Riverdock Restaurant. Fresh fish, burgers, pork and beef brisket, its all good. After leaving Mel's, ride north on Hwy 100 to Michael and ride west on the Hamburg-Michael road. Be careful, this road is narrow and twisty in places but a nice ride. When you reach Hamburg, ride until you hit the river and turn right (north) on CR2. Follow CR2 north along the East bank of the Mississippi to the junction of CR2 and Hwy 96. Take Hwy 96 west and ride until you reach Atlas IL and US 54. Turn west on Hwy 54 and ride across the Mississippi into Louisiana, MO. Remember, you are back in Missouri and there is a helmet law. After crossing the river into Missouri, turn south on Hwy 79 and ride through Clarksville, Elsbury, Foley, Winfield, and into O'fallon, MO. Another stop for food and refreshments is the Hillcrest in Elsbury. This is a scenic ride and allows you to ride along both sides of the Mississippi and along the Illinois river. Ride safe and have fun.
